Musky Mania 37, June 2006
Tournament Winners

All, Musky Mania 37 is in the books. It was a beautiful weekend to be on the water regardless of how the fishing action was. The Friday night cookout kicked off MM37 and was enjoyed by all that attended and was followed by a talk from guide Mark Curtis. I think there was just a small snowstorm in the NTL rec room, not a blizzard after his talk, it’s an inside joke, ask Gary, Dale, or I about it sometime and we’ll be glad to share with you.
The walleye bite off the docks at North Twin Lodge was very good, not too many keepers, but a lot of action. There were 37 folks that participated in MM37 and some of Dave Nickel’s group hit the water shortly after midnight trying the night bite, these guys’ fish hard. Dave broke in his new Fig Rig rod, but not the way he would have liked to have broke it in, we heard it actually broke after the 2nd or 3rd cast, the good thing is, Fig has a good warranty policy so he was able to replace it right at Guide’s Choice in Eagle River. Saturday morning came to life at NTL with a familiar sound that has been missing for a good number of MM outings; the infamous “Cock A Doodle Do” from Jim Laszewski, complete with the flapping of the wings, strutting, etc., if you missed it, I think Musky Pete has it on video. |
Overall, the Musky action was pretty slow on North and South Twin, everybody saw fish, but unfortunately they were still in transition from the spawn and were not in a very aggressive mood.
In spite of the conditions the MM group did manage to put 9 fish on the board, with the largest being caught by Cecil Marion, a nice fat 39 incher caught on North Twin. The second place fish was caught by “Musky Pete”, a 37 incher caught on Sand, and third place was won by Perry Clough with 31 ¾ inch caught on North Twin, congrats to all the winners and to all the folks who boated fish.
The Saturday noon lunch was great as usual, great job by Dave Nickel and his group, thanks again to Dave and his group for all their work in making MM37 a success, as well as Gary Borkowski and Musky Pete for all their help and of course Jennifer and Marti were great hosts as usual.
There were some great raffle items and door prizes and hopefully folks were pleased with what was provided, we had a good group of sponsors again.
A group picture was taken during the noon lunch period of which a plaque will be made from by Todd Wray and his Foto-Plaque business and will be displayed in the North Twin Lodge rec facility. Todd has also provided the MM group with a foto-plaque for the 1st place winner which will be part of winning 1st place in the future, you just need to make sure you have a digital or 35mm picture, Polaroid’s do not work.
Check out Todd’s website if you get a chance, great plaques for those special memories (http://www.fotoplaques.com). For folks staying at North Twin Lodge and who caught fish on North or South Twin, you should have gotten your musky pin(s) from Marti, if you did not let me know and I can get at a later date.
Thanks again to all the folks who attended MM37 and we are already looking forward to the fall outing which will be held out of North Twin Lodge on October 7th & 8th.
