Musky Mania 63, October 2019
Musky Mania 63 is in the books and it was a very good weekend. Only eight people participated but we had fun and two fish were caught. Most of the leaves were still in the trees and the fall colors were simply beautiful.

Friday was a pretty nice day for pre-fishing. The Koenings did their best but saw no action. Alyssa showed the boys how it is being done by catching beautiful tiger. Musky Pete and I decided to save our fishing energies and do happy hour instead.
Saturday morning was seasonally cold but pleasant to fish. Matt Reiter managed to catch the winning fish on a Bulldog on North Twin. Lunch was gator jambalaya prepared by David Koening that won Musky Mania last spring. With such a small group, we decided to save some work and eat in the cabin instead of moving everything to the rec. room back and forth. We also skipped the raffle but did the door prizes as usual. Saturday afternoon brought some rain, but the temperature was around 45 and not a lot of wind. Matt Reiter managed to catch his second fish of the tournament, on North Twin again. By mid afternoon the rain became stronger and Musky Pete and Alain headed back to the cabin for a mid-day nap and eventually to catch the early bird specials at the supper club. The others braved the rain but had no luck. Sunday, most of us were on the water bright and early at around 8. It was warm and very foggy with no wind first thing in the morning. We dragged a couple suckers around but not action. Water temperature was 51 and somewhat clear. |
Then something unusual happened for Alain, as reported by Musky Pete: “My partner is using a spinning rod because he does not like to get backlashes. Well, I knew that would spell disaster sooner or later and I was right. Sunday morning about 9:30 by the rock pile he hooks something he thinks is a rock but then he yells it's a fish. I turn around just in time to see a big fish, mid 40s, roll on the surface and break his line. He said he must have grabbed the wrong spinning rod because he thought he had 20# braid on it. Got the broken line in and pulled on it and it broke with very little effort. Probably 6# that has been on there for 20 years. Live and learn. Don't fish musky with a crappie rod. That was the only fish we saw all weekend.” Well, even if this all true, this is the first musky I got to see in 10 years, so those two seconds of action made my day!
Other lakes fished with no action during Musky Mania were Smokey, Palmer, and Sand. No sucker action all through the weekend. At the resort, the docks were being pulled on Saturday but enough were left for us to pull out on Sunday.
Another first, the award ceremony was held at the cabin. As per Musky Mania rules, Matt Reiter only won 1st place and the second and third places were drafted and won by Alain and Brandon Lewandowski that fished Musky Mania for the first time. It is kind of weird to get an award and cash prize for catching no fish…
A special thanks to our hosts Genevieve and Darren from Coadys’ Point of View Lake Resort, that took the time to join the group before the award ceremony. There has been a lot of changes at the resort and it was good to get to know each other. Among other things we talked about dates and the best options are May 30-31 and October 10-11 for MM64 and MM65, both out of Coadys’.
Before closing, I would like to formally apologize to Musky Pete for my loud snoring - I don’t think he slept much during the weekend. Well, live and learn for him too! Thanks again to all who attended and made Musky Mania 63 a great weekend. Please take a few minutes out of your busy life to think about and pray for our friend Gordie that was not able to join us this weekend.
