Musky Mania 50, June 2013
Tournament Winners
|
The Musky Mania “50th” anniversary outing is in the books with a memorial to our friend and fellow Musky Maniac Gary Winters. We dedicated MM50 to Gary and Musky Pete spread some of his ashes over the spot where Gary caught his MM45, 48.5 inch winning fish.
A total of 11 fish were boated during the outing assuring Mr. Musky did not win. MM50 kicked off with the Friday night cookout with brats/burgers and a lot of great socializing with Mother Nature providing some pleasant weather. Alain, the pickled pig’s tongue was great. Folk’s pre fishing on Thursday and Friday had some decent action on some of the smaller lakes with both Mel and Dave Nickel boating fish, with Dave’s being a beautiful 38 inch tiger. Gary Borkowski also boated a nice 36 ½ incher on Friday, Wayne Beyer boated a fish on his last cast of the day, and Corey Earl and Greg Friedrich both had fish action on Friday. |
Lake conditions on Twin for Saturday’s start were not ideal with the low water temps definitely impacting fish activity. With water temps in the high 50’s it appeared the fish had not spawned or may have just recently spawned and the bigger fish were not very active. Many good fish were seen in the shallows just cruising.
However, in spite of the somewhat poor conditions, folks made sure Mr. Musky did not win with Wayne Beyer doubling up before noon with 26 and 25 inch fish and Tom Mijal boating a 24 ½ inch fish.
A great lunch of pulled pork and fixings was provided by Dave Nickel and his group, great job guys and a tasty rhubarb dessert was provided by Jane Clough, thanks Jane. Lunch was followed by the usual drawing for door prizes and the raffle with some great prizes for both, thanks again to all of our supporters.
The raffle had some MM50 commemorative items with a beautiful custom rod made by Musky Pete, Homicide lures from Deathtrap Lures, in addition to a $50 gift certificate to Bass Pro from North Twin Lodge. Lucky, lucky, lucky was Gary Borkowski as he won the custom rod and a reel.
Saturday afternoon saw many folks heading to other waters in search of some warmer waters and more active fish. At the end of the day an additional 7 fish were boated; with the leaders being Greg Freidrich with a 40 incher and Mark Jacobs and Ron Roehrborn tied for 2nd and 3rd with 36 inch fish. Others boating fish Saturday afternoon were Dick Grasse, Dave Koenig, Jim Jessup, and Gordie Shaw.
Sunday morning brought some challenging conditions; with wind, rain, and 37 degree temps, it was not bluebird weather. In spite of conditions, folks were out pounding the water with a few active fish seen and one fish caught by Gordie Shaw on a Baby Dog at 41 ½ inches. Thanks to my partner being a good net man and the winning fish was in the boat. Congrats to all who caught fish; final results were 1st place Gordie Shaw 41 ½”, 2nd place Greg Freidrich 40”, and tied for 3rd with 36” fish were Mark Jacobs and Ron Roerhborn.
Thanks again to all for attending and to NTL (Marti and Jen) for the great accommodations and the two night stay raffle prize which I believe was won by Matt Zehner. Thanks also to Alain for all his work in handling the distribution of the MM info and the Musky Mania website. Please send your fish pics and any other pics you took during the outing to Alain so he can put on the website.
Boy it’s great to be retired as Gary and I stayed on for a couple of more days and had some pretty good action. Monday saw cold temps again and wind, had some good musky action, unfortunately we lost 3 fish, but we did hit the smallies and caught between 35-40 fish up to 21 ½ inches. Tuesday brought warmer conditions, again some good smallie action and I boated a 40 inch muskie and Gary lost one on a minnow bait and we had several more follows, so a good couple of days. Scott and Dick Grasse also fished K on Monday and Dick boated a nice 36 ½ incher.
Mark your calendars for the fall MM51 outing which will be October 11th & 12th. Attached is the cabin status that Marti provided me, only the cabins that folks signed up for are listed, if other folks are planning to attend Marti indicated he will have cabins available. I realize it’s early, but if you are planning to attend please let Alain know as soon as possible so we can get a cabin reserved for you.
Have a great summer and good luck chasing “skis”; hope to see you at MM 51.
