Musky Mania 44 will go down in the books as perhaps not the most memorable from the number of fish caught, but certainly as one of the most challenging from a weather standpoint.
The 21 folks that participated were faced with cold temps, snow, and high winds on Saturday and Sunday did not see much improvement, with colder temps, but at least less wind and no snow. Folks pre-fishing on Thursday and Friday boated some nice fish; Dave Nickel and Rick Kamps had several mid to high 40 inch fish, Greg Friedrich landed a nice 45 inch fish, and Musky Pete boated a 42 incher. There was some action on artificials, but the sucker bite was definitely on. Fortunately, the good weather held up for the Friday night cookout, good to see old friends and the campfire was very welcome. Saturday afternoon saw folks braving high winds and many heading out to their favorite hot spots or lakes that were not as wind blown, however they were hard to find. |
In spite of the weather conditions, at the end of the days fishing Mr. Musky was no longer the leader with Greg Friedrich boating 3 fish (2 @ 35 1/2" and a 38") with the 38 caught on a sucker and Gordie Shaw boating a 38" on a sucker on Eagle lake on the last drift of the day. Several other folks did manage some follows and Tim Muench lost a good fish on a sucker.
Sunday saw folks heading out in spite of 24 degree temps, Musky Mania folks are a hardy bunch or maybe a bit crazy in their quest to land that 50 incher. Fishing results for Sunday morning saw one fish caught by Mark Jacobs on a bucktail, Corey and Greg had some good action on suckers and artificials, but couldn't get Mr. Musky to take. Fishing ended at 11:30 on Sunday with a total of 5 fish caught, with Greg Friedrich and Gordie Shaw tying for 1st place and Mark Jacobs taking 3rd place.
Thanks again to all who attended MM44 and thanks again to Marti and Jen for their great accommodations and hospitality and we are looking forward to MM45 to be held on June 4th and 5th at North Twin Lodge.
